Buying Points Is Dumb

…except when it’s not. This is one of the rare times where it might actually make sense. Club Carlson’s flash sale is good for a 75% point bonus and it ends today (Tuesday). I think it’s worth buying only if:

  • You have a Carlson credit card giving you a free night on 2-night stays.
  • You are looking to book 2-night stays.
  • You are ok with the limited selection of Carlson hotels. (Most likely, this means you’re booking in Europe or Asia).
  • You want to book in the lowest or highest categories.

For example, if I were booking a Category 1 hotel with my 70,000 purchased points, I’d almost have enough points for 16 nights. For under 300 bucks, that’s a hell of a deal. With top-category hotels, you could do even better. But again, I’m assuming you’re ok with the hotel choices and have the credit card. Otherwise, this is a pass.
