Return Of The Lufthansa Card

It’s back…again. The 50,000-mile offer from Lufthansa is here for the next couple months. Is it any good? Yeah, definitely. If you need something from Barclays (and already have the Arrival and US Airways cards) then it’s a solid option. And now for the comment of the day about the redesign. From Scott:

“Your new logo looks like a bedroom device to me. No offense.”

Catching Up

Man, I talk about the new look for a day and I fall behind. Ok, let’s play a little catch up…

  • Yes, if you have an Ink card, you should be buying $200 Visa gift cards online at Staples.  I’m buying a bunch. Just make sure you stack bonuses. Your Ink card should be registered at Visa Savings Edge, and you should get to Staples through a portal (I’m using Swagbucks for this one).
  • 1,000 free Club Carlson points. This is an easy one. You should at the very least have a fake Twitter account for this stuff by now.
  • Free Turkish miles for kids. Again, it’s an easy one.
  • Sending flowers to a random mom (or even your own)? Get 30 American or United miles per dollar spent.

As far as the new look, thank you so much for the feedback. Making the font a little darker was mentioned a few times. I’ll see if that’s possible. For the most part, everyone loved the changes. My favorite comment was from reader Ed. He wrote, “What the heck is that logo? Is it Arabic characters? A guy snowboarding? Someone on a stretcher? You should have a contest.”

Well, Ed, you’re not alone. A few of you brought this up. The answer isn’t very exciting. Are you ready for this? The logo is…

One last thing. I mentioned David’s stuff yesterday and I really hope you checked it out. This whole thing came from an appreciation for what we do for each other. Nobody charged me a cent…they were just happy to do what they could. I did forget Stephanie, who designed everything. She has a consulting company here, and again, I hope you can contact her if you need any help with any tech issues. Both her and David are so great to work with. Thanks again!

New Look

After an incredible amount of work (mainly by others), the MileNerd blog has a brand new look! Some of the changes include:

  • The colors – You should be seeing a cool, brown/yellowish combo. If you have an older monitor and see a pink scheme, you can upgrade your driver (or techie stuff I know nothing about). One of my buddies has an old computer and the blog looks totally different on it than it does on his phone. Brown or pink… I think they both look cool.
  • The pages – There are now easy-to-find links for the Newbie Guide, the latest Top 25 list, and a Contact Me form. That form filters out possible spam email, so if I don’t respond, I promise I’m not ignoring you.
  • The links – The right side looks the same, with one small change – I’ve added a “Blogs I Like” section. I’ve always made it very clear that I don’t like a lot of blogs (and bloggers). Well, I don’t hate everyone. I decided to link to 5 blogs I enjoy reading. There are a few others, but these are my favorites.
  • The advertising – I had a big banner ad on the top of the page. It paid me around $1.50 a day. Needless to say, I wasn’t getting rich off that extra 10 bucks a week. I’ll eventually find ways to make money, but for now, I like the look without it.

There will be a few bugs for the next few days I’m sure. I have to figure all this out, so please let me know if you notice anything strange. If you subscribe by email or reader, I hope it’s still working. I guess I’ll find out soon. Any feedback helps. Like the colors? Hate the font? Whatever it is, feel free to let me know.

Last but not least, I want to say thanks to a couple of very talented people. Take a look at the new logo…great, right? It was impossible (even for someone as high-maintenance as me) to have a problem with it. And the logo on the “Best Credit Cards” page is even more spectacular! Both are courtesy of David Derwin. PreCheck With Avios

There are 2 prerequisites to this post:

  1. Knowing that I love TSA PreCheck.
  2. Knowing that I love British Airways Avios even more.
My feelings have always been strong for Avios points. Hoarder that I am, I’ve built up a big pile of them. But in the last few weeks, my love has turned into full-on lust. Hmm…this might be getting awkward (again). Anyway, being able to use Avios for US Airways flights has me going gaga. Which brings me to the point of this post…
I just booked a US Airways flight to the east coast using some Avios points. Since British Airways is a foreign airline, I wasn’t able to enter my Known Traveler Number (for slackers – the magical little digits that give me my beloved TSA PreCheck access). This is a dilemma, right? I mean, I need my PreCheck. I can’t use regular security lines like some kind of commoner. What am I, an animal?!?
The solution is actually pretty simple. I just had to take the following steps (under 30 seconds):
  1. I went to the Finnair website.
  2. Clicked “Manage Booking.” It’s the big box right above “Check In Online.”
  3. Entered my last name and booking reference number. This pulled up the flight.
  4. Changed the frequent flyer information for the booking. It showed my British Airways number, so I just switched it to my American Airlines information. Obviously, my Known Traveler Number is in my American account.
  5. Done.
The lesson, as always…if you don’t want to suck, PreCheck is your friend. MileNerd out!
