A Response From Plastiq

For those who missed it, I posted about Plastiq a couple weeks ago. In that time, reader Stephen already had some major issues there. Not good.

Soon after my post, I heard from the people at Plastiq. As always, I responded to the email.  I wasn’t ready to make another positive post about them after this debacle. What I wanted was a real, non-generic conversation. Some kind of accountability. And I think I got that from 2 people (Rebecca and Eliot). Here’s the final email in that conversation. Let’s hope they move things in the right direction…

Hi Paul – Rebecca forwarded your e-mail on to me personally. Good to meet you and thanks for bringing these issues to our attention. I wanted to provide a bit more detail on this issue as it may be valuable for your readers to see (up to you).

As part of our funding process, we are required by our financial partners to verify that every payment complies with regulations. Sometimes that requires more extensive review and proof that the payment is in exchange for goods or services (vs. payments to self, P2P, etc.).

Despite our best efforts, in the past two weeks we did not meet expectations, both our own and that of some of our customers. For this I’m sorry and want to assure everyone that we have taken measures to address the issues that arose and have put fixes in place that will make us more efficient.

We are building a company for the long-term and trying to do things right by our customers.  This has been a learning experience, and I would love to hear from anyone directly with further questions/comments or if you are experiencing any other issues. You can e-mail me directly at eliot@plastiq.com. We are listening and eager to fix this.

Best,

Eliot

Tuesday Triple

  • The BankAmericard Travel Rewards credit card from Bank of America decided to double their bonus. Still not the greatest offer in the world, but it’s worth 200 bucks.
  • Some of you are getting a strong targeted offer of 50% off the price to buy United miles. Good deal if you get it.
  • A couple of you said you were targeted for Marriott Gold by having the right kind of Visa card in your wallet.

  • American’s easy-to-forget-but-always-a-good-deal Reduced Mileage Awards are here. If you have an American Airlines credit card, don’t forget about these.
  • 5,000 bonus United miles from Rocketmiles. Another one. And another good deal.

Plastiq Explosive

(Please hold your applause for that title)

Man, another great email to share. You guys are killing it this week! This one is from Stephen, who wanted others to know some important feedback on Plastiq. That email is below:

Hey Paul,
I tried out Plastiq after seeing the blog post about it and it has caused so many problems!  I just wanted to let you know so you can warn your readers.
I tried to pay my rent using Plastiq but what they don’t tell you until after you press confirm is that it takes something like 10 days to process your payment.  Additionally, if you rent from a person rather than a company as I do, they will put the payment on hold until you send in a rental agreement or invoice.  After all these issues and delays and now being late on my rent, I cancelled the payment.  I received a email from my very angry landlady today stating that a company called “Plastiq” had withdrawn the rent amount from her bank account without authorization causing her account to be overdrawn…  She’s submitting a fraud complaint to her bank.  What a mess!  Anyways,  I would warn your readers about the potential dangers of using that service.
Thanks for all you do.  You’re a rockstar!
Regards,
Stephen

Free Uber Food

Great email from reader Steve:

“I know you’re all over the Uber stuff, but on the off chance you haven’t used Uber Eats yet, code FREEFRESH will get you $25 towards your first order.  I used it two weeks ago and my wife used it this last weekend, so I know it’s still good. Limited coverage maps, but I’m sure you have plenty of readers who live or work in LA, NY, Chicago, Toronto, or Barcelona. Btw, our two delivery times were 8 min. and 6 min.”
(Edit: A few readers emailed to say this only works in LA)
