- A note on charity – If you’re one of the people saying “stop the ice bucket challenges,” I have 2 good words to describe you….bad human. Don’t do it if you don’t want to, but why would you ask people to stop something helpful? I’ve been nominated a few times, and my absolute favorite of those was from my friend Richard here.
- A note on buying miles/points – It’s just not my style. But different strokes for different folks. Bonuses for purchasing Alaska and British miles are available.
- A note on chatter – Reader Jeremy sent me a very interesting idea…a weekly podcast where I could answer questions and chat about miles/points for 10 minutes or so. I hadn’t thought of it before, but I’m definitely going to consider the suggestion. Much like me, Jeremy isn’t too impressed by most bloggers. And, also like me, he realizes my personality is more suited for this than the usual pack of dorks. I’m considering the podcast idea. Let me know if you guys would be interested in something like this.
- A note on being less dumb – There are a few things you need to learn as an adult. Otherwise, you risk looking like an idiot. For example, adults should know the differences between your/you’re and lose/loose. I actually saw someone write, “your a looser” as a comment today. That could be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.
TV Miles
I recently posted links for 25,000 American and 30,000 United miles if you sign up for DirecTV. I know some of you like to take advantage of these, so here’s one courtesy of reader Tim. The competitor (Dish) is offering 12,500 Southwest points. Last year, this offer also came with a free iPad, so if you do sign up, make sure you try to negotiate with the phone rep. Low odds of working? Sure. Worth the extra effort? But of course.
Monday’s Deals
Some deals to start the week…
- 500 free Lufthansa miles for registering here. It’s not an English site, so use Google Translate to make it readable. If you browse the internet with Chrome, the translate option should pop up automatically.
- Get 1,000 more Lufthansa miles for registering your birthday. Again, make sure you translate the page.
- Cathay Pacific has a great contest going here.
- $25 for joining the Alaska Airlines mileage program. Oregon or Washington state only.
3 End Of Week Deals
Closing out the week with a trifecta:
- Virgin Atlantic is offering more miles on their card than ever before. Of course, it’s going to take a ridiculous amount of spending to get the full bonus. Among the other requirements is spending TWELVE-THOUSAND DOLLARS in 6 months!
- 10,000 Lufthansa miles for a $160 subscription to The Economist is back.
- The Starwood (SPG) credit cards are available with lower spends. $3,000 instead of the usual $5,000. Personal and Business cards are both available.
Have a great weekend, nerds!
A Rare Great Car Rental Promo
Rental car promos aren’t usually worth the 30 seconds it takes to scroll through them. But this one is pretty damn good and I was nerdily excited to see it again. The details are:
- Free rental day for every 2 “qualifying rentals” from National.
- Qualifying = Midsize or larger rented for 2+ days in the US.
- Get extra points towards free rentals for referring friends, getting emails, using the app, etc.
If you rent cars regularly, you should be able to hit this one hard. You have until the end of January to rack up your free rental days. As always, it’s a good idea to use coupon codes on National rentals. You should already have status by now, either from a status match or any of the other methods mentioned here.
